Media commits 153 violations law on elections

The Interior Ministry's Elections Supervision Committee revealed after a meeting on Saturday with representatives from the press that it found 153 media violations of the electoral law in April alone. The committee added that in the next few days it will send notices to violating media outlets. It warned that the committee will refer violators to the judiciary if they continue to breach the electoral law. "We hope that media outlets will fully abide with the implementation of the law," said Ghassan Abu Alwan, who heads the committee. The committee warned against the escalation of political rhetoric among politicians and in the media. It added that media outlets were prohibited from supporting or campaigning for any candidate or electoral list. It warned against committing libel and slander against any candidate or electoral list. For his part, the head of the Press Federation, Mohammed Baalbaki, who attended the meeting, said it was the duty of the Lebanese press to abide by the law and ethics of the profession.
