Reduce your emissions ... save the planet

The constant burning of fossil fuels releases huge amounts of greenhouse gases (GHGs), into our atmosphere. GHGs are a family of gases that have the ability to trap the sun’s energy on earth in the form of heat (similar to that of a greenhouse), and thus raise the earth’s temperature in a phenomenon known as global warming. This warming causes changes in the earth’s climate system that lead to climate change. Greenhouse gases are also emitted through deforestation, land use changes, and natural processes. Life on earth depends on a certain concentration of GHGs in the atmosphere in order to make the climate warm enough.

While this may seem like a small change, it is already throwing the world off balance in a number of ways. For example, as the planet warms up, the sea level is predicted to rise due to the melting of ice sheets and the thermal expansion of ocean water.

How to collaborate in limiting the climate change?.... Reduce your emissions:

  • Replace regular incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent light bulbs, which use up to 80% less energy than regular bulbs
  • Unplug electronics (like your TV) from the wall when you’re not using them. Even when turned off, they use energy.
  • Wait until you have a full load of laundry before using the washing machine.
  • Take shorter showers. Heating water uses energy.
  • Do not keep the door of your fridge open for a long period of time.
  • Buy energy efficient electrical appliances. These products usually display specific labels such as ENERGY STAR label.
  • Buy a fuel efficient vehicle that gets more kilometers per fuel tank.
  • Turn off the lights in rooms that are not being used and when you leave home.
  • Walk or take the bus instead of driving.
  • Consume more local fruits and veggies and reduce your consumption of meat.
  • Insulate your home to decrease the amount of heat and air conditioning needed.
  • Use cloth bags for shopping instead of taking plastic bags.
  • Plant trees in your neighborhood.
